The Hallwyl Museum: a Victorian paragon

Step back in time to the early 20th-century when Count Walther von Hallwyl and his wife, Wilhelmina, moved into their winter residence. Before they even moved in, Wilhelmina had already decided that the house with its contents would become a museum. She had been collecting art and antiques for a long time by then and wanted to create a collection that would portray the culture of her time and times past.

Eight years after Wilhelmina passed, the museum first opened its doors to the public. Her wish came true as the home and art collection are an amazing representation of the culture of high society in the late Victorian age. Ever since it opened its doors in 1938, the house and the collection have been preserved to the highest standards.

Wilhelmina von Hallwyl’s collection

The Countess von Hallwyl left behind a varied collection which includes paintings, porcelain, furniture, silver pieces, household objects and personal possessions. The complete collection contains around 50,000 objects. Among the paintings in the collection are several works Dutch and Flemish Old Masters including Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jan Griffier, Catharina Backer and many others.

Along with the beautifully maintained rooms of the house that you can visit at the museum, you can also see temporary exhibitions. Many of the temporary exhibitions feature the stories of the people who lived and worked at Hallwyl House at the turn of the 20th-century. Other, shorter, temporary exhibitions showcase contemporary art and design which either challenge or complement the historic environment.

It was a cool place but honestly, it felt too crowded. Couldn't enjoy the pieces fully. Still, our guide was nice but I just wished it wasn't so packed. 3 stars.
