Day trips from Stockholm to Skokloster Castle

If you are looking to explore Sweden beyond Stockholm, than a day trip to Skokloster Castle could be exactly what you are looking for. A visit to Skokloster will take you north of the city to the scenic Sko Peninsula on Lake Mälaren. The Baroque castle has retained most of its original features, and is one of the best preserved castles in the world.

With this ticket you can visit Skokloster Castle’s magnificent state apartments, permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions. You can easily make your own way through the castle but both guided tours and audio guides can be booked on-site.

The history of Skokloster

From the 13th-century until the Swedish reformation in the 16th-century Skokloster belonged to a Cistercian convent. During the reformation the grounds were confiscated by the Crown, and in 1611 the estate was gifted to Herman Wrangel by King Karl IX. It was his son, Carl Gustaf Wrangel and daughter in law, who had the castle built between 1654 and 1676.

300 years later, in 1967, the castle and its extensive collection passed to the Swedish state and it became a state-run museum. Over the years, Skokloster Castle’s collection had grown to consist of more than 50,000 objects. Among the many objects is the world-famous masterpiece Vertumnus by Guiseppe Arcimboldo, and other spectacular art pieces.

Visit Skokloster Castle in summer

Thought it would be more exciting. The castle was interesting, but the tour guide didn’t have a lot of energy. I wished for a bit more engagement. Still, it was good to see it.

El castillo es bonito y tiene historia, pero la visita guiada me dejó con más preguntas que respuestas. Debería haber más información sobre las habitaciones. Aun así, ¡vale la pena verlo!
