The problem with ancient Rome is that what survives is fragmentary and what is missing is enormous. This walk spends its time on reconstruction: what stood where, who used it, and why the ground level is now several metres higher than it was.
We cover the imperial centre on foot, working outwards so the geography makes sense. The Colosseum is explained from outside — how it filled and emptied, what happened underneath the floor — before you decide whether to queue for the inside.
