A loop, not a line

This route is a loop, which matters more than it sounds: you end where you started, so it fits around a hotel, a lunch booking or a train. About 3 km in total.

It deliberately avoids Karlova, the main street between the Old Town Square and the bridge. That street carries most of the foot traffic and almost none of the interest, and stepping one block off it changes the walk completely.

1. The square and the Jewish Quarter · about 800 m

Start: Old Town Square.

Stand with the Týn church behind you and the town hall to your left. The astronomical clock is on the tower; the interesting part is the mechanism and the calendar dial, not the hourly figures, so there is no reason to wait for the hour.

Leave the square by its north-west corner into Josefov, the former Jewish quarter. The wide boulevard cutting through it is nineteenth century — the district was largely demolished and rebuilt around the surviving synagogues and the cemetery, which is why grand apartment blocks now stand beside medieval buildings.

2. Down to the river · about 700 m

Continue north-west to the embankment. Turn left and follow the river south with the water on your right.

This stretch gives you the classic view across to the castle hill without any of the bridge crowd. Keep going until you reach the Old Town bridge tower at the head of Charles Bridge.

You do not need to cross. Standing at the tower and looking through the arch gives you the bridge, the river and the hill in one frame, which is the picture most people cross the whole bridge to get.

3. The lanes south of Karlova · about 900 m

Instead of walking back up Karlova, take the streets one block south of it. This is the quiet parallel route: courtyards, a working university quarter, and the Bethlehem Chapel square, which is a large open space with almost nobody in it despite being four minutes from the busiest street in the city.

This section is the reason the walk is a loop rather than a there-and-back.

4. Back to the square · about 600 m

Head north-east and pick up Havelská, the long, narrow market street. It has been a market since the thirteenth century and still works as one, though what is sold has changed.

From its eastern end the Old Town Square is two minutes away, and you arrive at it from a different corner than you left, which is the best way to end.

When to walk it

Before nine in the morning or after six in the evening. In between, the centre is genuinely crowded, and no route planning fixes that.

Practical notes

The cobbles are uneven and polished slippery in wet weather. There are few public toilets in the old centre and most cost a small fee in cash.
