The Historic German Polar Expedition
The original crew of the Hansa departed from Bremerhaven on June 15, 1896, under the watchful eyes of King Wilhelm I and Chancellor Bismarck. Just a month into their voyage, the ship became ensnared in a thick expanse of pack ice, slowly becoming more trapped as the days progressed. As the relentless ice began to crush their vessel, the crew was forced to abandon ship and seek refuge on an ice floe, where they faced the perils of limited provisions and lurking polar bears. Remarkably, it was a year later that the exhausted survivors finally returned to the safety of land.
