Millesgården Sculpture Park
Nestled on the picturesque island of Lidingö, the Millesgården Museum serves as both an art museum and a stunning sculpture garden. This enchanting destination offers a refreshing change of scenery from Stockholm’s bustling city center, allowing visitors to delve into the broader cultural treasures of the region. The museum boasts an impressive array of exhibitions featuring not only magnificent sculptures but also elegant fountains, intricate mosaics, and classic artworks that bring together various artistic expressions.
One of the highlights of the museum is its exquisite Italian-style sculpture garden, which features a series of well-designed terraces, charming alleys, majestic columns, and breathtaking panoramic views overlooking the Värten inlet toward central Stockholm. Within the historical home of Carl Milles, guests can explore the sculptor’s studio, admire his remarkable collection of antiques, and gain insights into the creative process of one of Sweden’s most celebrated artists. Additionally, the recently established Millesgården Art Hall regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, showcasing a diverse range of contemporary artwork that keeps the museum vibrant and engaging.
Carl and Olga Milles’ Residence
The house where Carl and Olga Milles resided was built in 1908, shortly after Carl completed the iconic Gustav Vasa statue, which you can currently view at the Nordiska Museet on Djurgården. His renowned works can also be found in various locations throughout the city, including Sjöguden (Sea God) located at Skeppsbron and the impressive Aviator Monument situated in Karlaplan. However, the biggest treasure trove of Carl Milles’ artistic creations is undoubtedly the Millesgården Museum, which holds the most extensive collection of his works in the world.
While Carl excelled in sculpture, his wife, Olga Milles, was a talented portrait painter whose artistic contributions enriched their home. Charming elements of her work are integrated into the residence, including decorative paintings that adorn the kitchen cupboards, showcasing her creative flair. In a remarkable act of generosity, the couple established Millesgården as a foundation and entrusted it to the Swedish public in 1936, ensuring that future generations could appreciate their legacy.
