Millesgården Sculpture Park

Nestled on the picturesque island of Lidingö, the Millesgården Museum serves as both an art museum and a captivating sculpture garden. For those eager to venture beyond the typical routes of Stockholm’s urban core, a visit here offers a delightful escape into the broader landscapes of the city. The museum boasts a unique configuration featuring a rich assortment of sculptures, ornate fountains, intricate mosaics, and classic paintings, creating an immersive artistic experience.

The highlight of the museum is undoubtedly its Italian-inspired sculpture garden, which is adorned with charming terraces, stunning fountains, lush alleys, elegant columns, and breathtaking vistas overlooking the Värten inlet towards the heart of Stockholm. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the interiors of what was once the artists’ residence, where Carl Milles’ studio and an extensive antique collection are on display. Furthermore, the recently established Millesgården Art Hall showcases a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, offering fresh artistic encounters on each visit.

The Residence of Carl and Olga Milles

In 1908, artists Carl and Olga Milles decided to build their home on Lidingö, shortly after Carl crafted the remarkable Gustav Vasa statue, now proudly displayed at the Nordiska Museet in Djurgården. Throughout Stockholm, several other notable works by Carl Milles can be appreciated, including the magnificent Sjöguden (Sea God) at Skeppsbron, as well as the Aviator Monument located in Karlaplan. However, Millesgården Museum is renowned for housing the largest collection of Carl Milles’ masterpieces globally, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts.

While Carl devoted his artistic talents to sculpture, Olga Milles excelled in portrait painting. Her artistic contributions are evident throughout their home, including the beautiful decorative art seen on their kitchen cupboards. In a noble gesture, the couple transformed Millesgården into a foundation and graciously entrusted it to the people of Sweden in 1936, ensuring its cultural legacy endures.
