Sculpture park Millesgården

The Millesgården Museum is an art museum and sculpture garden in one on he island of Lindingö. Visiting here will take you off the beaten path of Stockholm’s city centre and let you explore the wider city. The one-of-a-kind museum consists of different sections and is filled with sculptures, fountains, mosaics, classic paintings and more.

The museum is best known for its Italian style sculpture garden with terraces, fountains, alleys, columns and amazing views over the Värten inlet towards central Stockholm. Inside of what was once the artists’ home, you can visit the sculptor’s studio and antique collection. The latest addition to the museum is the Millesgården Art Hall, which has different temporary exhibitions every year.

The home of Carl Milles and Olga Milles

Carl and Olga Milles built their house on Lidingö in 1908, just after Carl had created the Gustav Vasa statue that is now on display at the Nordiska Museet on Djurgården. Several other pieces by Carl Milles can be found around the city, such as Sjöguden (Sea God) at Skeppsbron and the Aviator Monument in Karlaplan. But the Millesgården Museum has the largest collection of Carl Milles’ work in the world.

While her husband created sculptures, Olga Milles was a successful portrait painter. When it came to their home, Olga’s painting are part of it, such as the decorative paintings on the kitchen cupboards. The couple turned Millesgården into a foundation and donated it to the Swedish people in 1936.

I enjoyed the sculptures and the whole atmosphere, but it was super crowded when I went. Had to wait a long time for the cafe. I might go again during a weekday. Overall cool place though!
