Discover the Struggles of the Danish Resistance
The Museum of Danish Resistance offers a profound insight into the courageous efforts of both men and women who actively opposed Nazi occupation during World War II. Nestled primarily beneath the surface, this museum serves as a time capsule, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the challenging era of occupation in Denmark. Through a variety of engaging exhibitions, you will gain an understanding of how the occupation reshaped the lives of the Danish citizens and how the resistance movement emerged from the shadows.
During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to interactively engage with the history of the Danish resistance. A comprehensive digital map highlights the sites of significant acts of sabotage orchestrated by these brave individuals. Visitors can also take part in hands-on activities, such as printing clandestine newsletters, intercepting telephone communications, and deciphering the notorious Enigma code utilized by the Germans.
Explore the Complex Lives of Five Historical Figures
While it may seem straightforward in hindsight to have joined the resistance, the reality during that period was far more complicated. Early resistance efforts were confined to a small group and involved harrowing decisions. By following the experiences of five remarkable Danes, you can delve into the myriad of challenges and moral conflicts they faced.
Throughout your journey at the Museum of Danish Resistance, you’ll encounter the stories of Musse Hartig, Jørgen Kieler, Thorkild Lund-Jensen, Karl Christensen, and Henning Brøndum. While four of these figures took a stand against the Nazis, Henning Brøndum controversially sided with the Peter Group, aligning himself with the occupiers. Musse Hartig struggled to balance her resistance activities with her role as a mother and her communist ideals, highlighting the personal sacrifices involved. On the other hand, student Thorkild Lund-Jensen found himself in hiding as a result of his efforts against the Nazis, while Karl Christensen courageously targeted factories that were complicit with the Germans. Jørgen Kieler’s commitment to the armed resistance led to severe ramifications, affecting not only him but also those around him.
