A royal home turned art museum
Waldemarsudde consists of a mansion, a gallery and the surrounding park and gardens. The mansion was once the home of Prince Eugen (1865 – 1947), the youngest son of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia. He had the Mansion built in 1903-1905 and had the Gallery added in 1913.
The prince was a leading landscape painter in his time, as well as an important art collector. Upon his death, the estate became a museum, with the ground floor reception rooms, such as the dining room and library, of the Mansion preserved and open to the public as well. The upper floors and the Gallery show work from the Waldemarsudde collection as well as temporary exhibitions.
Prince Eugen’s art collection
Prince Eugen collected art for 60 years, focusing mostly on Swedish contemporary art. The collection of the museum is a clear indication of the Prince’s taste, and includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphics and medallion art. The bulk of the collections consists of landscape oil paintings but there are also many portraits and still lifes.
Waldemarsudde includes a 70,000 square meter park, which is surrounded by water on three sides. Amongst the flowers and trees of the park stand various sculptures, including Rodin’s The Thinker and several works by Carl Milles. On the property you can also find the Old House, a large Linseed Oil Mill, a shop, restaurant and café.
