An Art Museum Born from Royal Heritage

Waldemarsudde is an enchanting estate that features a grand mansion, an impressive gallery, and expansive parklands adorned with meticulously curated gardens. This magnificent mansion was once the residence of Prince Eugen (1865 – 1947), the youngest son in the royal line of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia. Constructed between 1903 and 1905, the mansion was complemented by the addition of the gallery in 1913, which further enriched its cultural offerings.

A celebrated landscape painter of his era, Prince Eugen was not only a gifted artist but also a dedicated art collector. Following his passing, the estate transformed into a public museum. The main reception spaces on the ground floor, including the elegantly preserved dining room and the library, are accessible to visitors, allowing them to step back in time and experience the opulence of royal living. Meanwhile, the upper levels alongside the gallery showcase the treasures of the Waldemarsudde collection, featuring notable temporary exhibitions alongside permanent displays.

The Art Collection of Prince Eugen

Over a span of six decades, Prince Eugen passionately curated a remarkable art collection, with a particular focus on contemporary Swedish artworks. This collection serves as a remarkable testament to his refined aesthetic sensibilities, comprising an array of paintings, sculptures, sketches, graphics, and medallion art. The majority of the collection is dominated by exquisite landscape oil paintings, while numerous portraits and still lifes also add depth to the assortment.

Surrounding the mansion is an expansive park, measuring 70,000 square meters, which is uniquely framed by water on three sides. Meandering through the park, visitors encounter stunning sculptures, including the renowned The Thinker by Rodin, as well as various striking creations by Carl Milles. In addition to the wealth of art, the estate features the Old House, a historical Linseed Oil Mill, and a cozy shop, café, and restaurant where one can indulge in local delicacies.
