A Majestic Residence Transformed into an Art Museum
Waldemarsudde is a splendid estate that encompasses a grand mansion, an art gallery, and beautifully landscaped gardens. This luxurious mansion was the residence of Prince Eugen (1865 – 1947), who was the youngest offspring of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia. Construction of the Mansion took place between 1903 and 1905, with an art gallery added in 1913 to showcase the Prince’s impressive oeuvre.
Recognized as a prominent landscape painter during his era and a passionate art collector, Prince Eugen’s vision for the estate was deeply intertwined with his appreciation for the arts. After his passing, the estate was converted into a museum, where visitors can explore the preserved reception areas on the ground floor, including the elegantly appointed dining room and a cozy library. The upper floors and the gallery host not only pieces from the Waldemarsudde collection but also feature temporary exhibitions that showcase a variety of artistic talent.
The Art Collection of Prince Eugen
Over a span of sixty years, Prince Eugen amassed an impressive art collection predominantly focused on contemporary Swedish artists. The works on display in the museum reflect the Prince’s refined tastes and include a diverse assortment of paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphics, and medallion art. While the collection is particularly renowned for its landscape oil paintings, it also features a variety of striking portraits and captivating still lifes, offering a rich visual experience.
Encompassing a sprawling 70,000 square meters, Waldemarsudde’s park is surrounded by water on three sides, creating a serene and picturesque environment. As visitors stroll through the meticulously tended flowers and trees, they will encounter various sculptures, including Rodin’s iconic The Thinker and several masterworks by Carl Milles. The estate also houses the Old House, a large Linseed Oil Mill, along with a charming shop, restaurant, and café where guests can unwind and enjoy refreshments.
