Discover the Stockholm Archipelago by boat
The Stockholm Archipelago is as much a part of the city as its streets, monuments and people. The change in scenery from the city centre to the heart of the archipelago is likely to take your breath away. A tour of the Stockholm Archipelago by boat is a must-do when you visit the Swedish capital.
The tour departs in front of the Royal Palace, on Gamla Stan. Along the way, the English-speaking guide will tell you all about the sights around you, the boat itself, the Swedish royal family, Swedish traditions and much more. You can also pay a visit to the on board bar to buy some drinks and snacks.
Sights to see on the Stockholm Archipelago boat tour
The boat will take you from the city centre of Stockholm to Vaxholm Fortress and back again. Along the way you’ll get a great impression of the archipelago and its nature. Some of the sights and islands you’ll cruise passed include Fjäderholmarna, the Nyckelviken nature reserve, Stora Höggarn and Granholmen.
The Vaxholm Fortress dates back to the 16th century, when King Gustav Vasa commissioned an outpost in the archipelago. The original fortress withstood attack on two occasions, once by the Danes and the second by Russians. In the 19th century the old fortress was demolished and the current fortress was built, however a test showed that it would not stand up to an attack and a new fortress was built at Oskar-Fredriksborg. Today Vaxholm Fortress is a museum.
