A Truly Unique Museum Experience in Amsterdam

Amsterdam boasts a plethora of renowned art museums, including iconic establishments like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. However, STRAAT distinguishes itself as both part of this illustrious company and as an entity that stands out in its own remarkable way. While the masterpieces housed in those famed museums once shaped the realms of fashion, design, and culture significantly, today’s street art and graffiti are making similarly profound impressions on the contemporary artistic landscape.

Enveloped within the gritty charm of a regenerated 8,000 m2 industrial warehouse, STRAAT aligns seamlessly with the edgy aesthetic of its exhibits. The venue’s raw environment, far from conventional comforts, features no heating and intentionally uneven floors. This deliberate design echoes the rebellious spirit of the artwork, inviting visitors to engage deeply and challenge their perceptions.

A Hub of Creativity and Innovation

At STRAAT, art is ever-evolving; exhibitions regularly rotate as new pieces are continually integrated into the collection. If you time your visit just right, you might witness artists at work, creating fresh masterpieces before your eyes. The diverse array of artists showcased reflects the vibrant international street art movement, each contributing a unique narrative, background, style, and undeniable talent to the scene.

The artwork curated for STRAAT is meant to be experienced in this innovative environment; similar to outdoor street art, the pieces are often crafted on-site. An eye-catching giant portrait of Anne Frank adorns the exterior, transforming the building’s facade into part of the exhibition. Nestled in the historical NDSM wharf, STRAAT not only stands as a museum but is also situated in an area rich in artistic expression and cultural heritage, marked as a national monument. All around, from towering cranes to shipping containers, vivid graffiti captures the essence of Amsterdam’s colorful urban art scene.

Inside those walls, the art looms as impressively as if displayed in the open air, yet STRAAT enhances the experience by offering context and insights into each piece. Visitors gain a deeper understanding of the artists’ intentions and messages—an educational journey that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

I loved the art at STRAAT but man, it was really cold inside! Made it hard to enjoy everything. Maybe bring a jacket if you go? Overall, a nice experience though—worth a visit!
