Tales of Swedish naval history

The museum has collected around 50,000 objects, over 900,000 images and the largest collection of nautical books in the Nordic countries, that tell the stories of Sweden’s maritime activities from both civilians and the military. Among the objects on display in the museum are model ships, weapons, uniforms and works of art. Even the building itself is maritime themed, including the mosaic floors and ornate décor.

As you make your way through the museum, you’ll move from the ground floor to the basement and on to the top floor. One of the many highlights in the museum’s collection is the Amphion, Gustav III’s pleasure yacht. In the memorial hall models and figureheads surround the stern section of the Amphion from 1778, and you can see the ship’s cabin where the king orchestrated an attack on Russia.

Take your little explorers to the National Maritime Museum

Stockholm’s Maritime Museum is fun for all ages, as it’s very family friendly. The museum has a playroom, especially for the super young visitors (0-6). The playroom takes kids underwater, to a magical part of the Baltic Sea with submarines, fish, sunken treasures and shipwrecks.

For older kids there are creative workshops on the weekend, with different themes throughout the year, such as shipbuilding. The workshops require a separate ticket for kids which can be bought at the reception desk but is free for the adults who accompany them.

The museum had a lot of artifacts and the big ship model was so impressive. We really liked the layout, but some areas felt a bit crowded. Overall, very nice!
