The story of Woltje

The story of Woltje’s Backery begins on 11 October 1799. During a visit to Gouda, Woltje from Volendam discovered the syrup waffle. She took the recipe with her to Volendam and even though the syrup waffle was not exactly the same as the one in Gouda, it was an instant hit! Her creation was the Volendam waffle, which is slightly different. Woltje perfected the recipe for the standard Stroopwafel, but the Volendam waffle remained on the menu. Of course, if you’re in the area, you have to taste it for yourself!
