Ten minutes north of the old town the city changes completely. Kalamaja is a district of wooden houses — painted, tightly packed, built for workers — and beside it Telliskivi occupies a former industrial site that has been reused rather than demolished.
This half-day is about the twentieth century: industry, occupation, independence, and what a small city does with a large amount of inherited industrial building stock. It also passes the shoreline, which most visitors to Tallinn never reach at all.
Good for a second visit, or for a first visit if the medieval centre is not what brought you.
