Before life there were diamonds

The journey of the diamond started 3 billion years ago, 200 kilometres beneath the surface. The museum explains every step a diamond has to take before it becomes a piece of jewellery. The Diamond Museum Amsterdam, established in 2007, will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about these stones. It is the only museum in Europe that completely revolves around diamonds.

The permanent exhibition consists of 15 different themes, which will show you all the different facets of diamonds. From the origins of diamonds to the craft of diamond polishing and onto some of the most amazing masterpieces. You can see the jewels of the Dutch royal family and the smallest cut diamond in the world, and learn the difference between a real and a fake diamond. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions about different subjects concerning diamonds.

History of Diamonds in Amsterdam

Diamonds in Amsterdam have a history that goes way back. Amsterdam has had a blooming diamond industry ever since the Dutch Golden Age, during the 16th and 17th century. Famous diamonds like the Cullinan (the largest uncut diamond ever found) and the Koh-I-Noor (Mountain of Light) have been polished in Amsterdam.

At the end of the 19th century, there were more than 700 polishing wheels in use in Amsterdam. This is why Amsterdam proudly called itself ‘the city of diamonds’ during its heyday. This history of diamonds in Amsterdam makes this city the most logical and fascinating place for a diamond museum.

Honestly, I thought it would be more interesting. The history is cool but just felt like too much reading, not enough to see. Still, some nice pieces tho.
