The city the popes rebuilt

Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries Rome was comprehensively redesigned — not as archaeology but as theatre. Squares were carved out, fountains were installed as the visible end of aqueducts, and streets were straightened to give you a view when you turned a corner.

This afternoon follows that design at walking pace. Piazza Navona sits on the outline of a Roman stadium, which is why it is that shape. The Pantheon is the best-preserved building of the ancient world and is still in use, which is why it survived at all.

The route between the set pieces matters as much as the set pieces — that is where the city actually lives.
