A capital designed on purpose

Helsinki became a capital in 1812 and was largely built to order — a neoclassical centre laid out at once, then a second wave of national romanticism and modernism a century later. Very few European cities have such a legible design history, because very few were built in so few goes.

This walk uses the buildings to tell that story: the Senate Square as a deliberate statement, the granite-and-soapstone architecture that followed, and the twentieth-century design culture that made the city’s name.

It is a walk about how a small country decided what it wanted to look like — which turns out to be more interesting than any single building on the route.
