In the nineteenth century much of Paris was demolished and rebuilt — wide boulevards, uniform facades. Le Marais largely escaped it. Walking there today means seeing a texture that has been lost almost everywhere else in the city: narrow streets, houses built around courtyards, centuries leaning against each other.
We split the afternoon in two. First the inside of the Marais — courtyards, small squares, the details you do not notice at street level. Then we head north into the covered passages: shopping arcades from before shopping centres existed, roofed in iron and glass in the eighteen-hundreds. Most visitors have no idea they are there, and several still hold their original shopfronts.
This route was put together with second-time visitors in mind — people who have seen the headline sights and are curious about the fabric of the city.
