Millesgården Sculpture Park
Situated on Lidingö island, the Millesgården Museum offers visitors an exceptional blend of an art museum and a sculpture garden within its expansive grounds. A trip here promises not just a break from the hustle and bustle of Stockholm’s urban landscape but also a chance to delve deeper into the cultural treasures surrounding the city. This unique destination features a myriad of sections filled with enchanting sculptures, elegant fountains, intricate mosaics, and classic paintings, creating an immersive artistic experience.
The museum is particularly renowned for its beautiful Italian-style sculpture garden, characterized by its tiered terraces, captivating fountains, serene pathways, and majestic columns that frame stunning vistas over the Värten inlet, leading your gaze toward the heart of central Stockholm. Within the original dwelling of the artist himself, visitors can explore the sculptor’s studio, as well as an impressive assortment of antiques that reflect the couple’s artistic journey. A notable recent development is the Millesgården Art Hall, which hosts a rotating selection of temporary exhibitions each year, adding fresh experiences for returning guests.
The Residence of Carl and Olga Milles
The distinguished couple, Carl and Olga Milles, established their residence on Lidingö in 1908, shortly after Carl completed the iconic Gustav Vasa statue, which now proudly stands at the Nordiska Museet on Djurgården. Additionally, Carl Milles’ artistic creations can be admired throughout the city, including notable works like Sjöguden (Sea God) at Skeppsbron and the Aviator Monument located in Karlaplan. However, it is at the Millesgården Museum where the most comprehensive collection of Carl Milles’ art can be appreciated, showcasing his genius in one location.
While Carl was busy sculpting, his wife Olga Milles was making her mark as a talented portrait painter. Her artistry is woven throughout their home, with decorative touches like her painted kitchen cupboards enhancing the ambiance. In 1936, this artistic legacy was solidified when the couple transformed Millesgården into a foundation and graciously donated it to the Swedish public, ensuring that their creative influences would endure for generations to come.
