The north-east, where the crowds stop

North-eastern Paris is the part most visitors never reach. Here the city gets on with its own life: neighbourhood markets, workshops, views opening off the hills, and roughly a third of the crowding you find in the centre.

The day begins along the Canal Saint-Martin, with its iron footbridges and working locks — nineteenth-century infrastructure that the neighbourhood has completely made its own. From there we climb to Belleville, one of the steepest slopes in the city, where the view over Paris is as wide as the one from Montmartre but without a selfie stick in front of it.

The afternoon is spent in the Buttes-Chaumont, the least known of the large Paris parks, built over a former quarry and, with its cliffs and bridges, unlike anywhere else in the city.

Because it is a full day, stopping and sitting down is part of the plan. Where you stop is up to you.
