Get to know the man behind the art

Rembrandt van Rijn spend almost twenty years of his life, living in the house. When you step inside you will follow his life story from the moment he moved in until his forced departure due to debts. Though 2.5 centuries separate Rembrandt’s living in the house and it becoming a museum, it has been beautifully restored to take you back to the 17th-century.

The latest refurbishment of the museum was completed in 2023, which gave the museum 30% more space to tell the painters story. With five new spaces and a brand new multimedia tour, Rembrandt’s House and the 17th-century truly come alive before your eyes.

A home, a studio, a museum

As you walk through the museum, you’ll see Rembrandt’s living room, where he also slept, art room and the studio where he created many of his incredible pieces. The forced sale of Rembrandt’s belongings in the 17th-century meant that a list was drawn up of everything there was in the house, room by room. And that list is how the museum has been able to so accurately reconstruct the house and living environment.

The new spaces created during the latest refurbishment of the museum include an epilogue room, where you can see the entire list, an etching loft and a third exhibition hall. Every day in the museum, you can join etching and painting demonstrations. And in the studio, you can learn how Rembrandt made his paints.

It was a great place to learn about Rembrandt, but it was so crowded. Didn’t get to enjoy it as much as I wanted. Still recommend it tho!
