The most efficient way to understand Paris is to begin where Paris began. This walk opens on the Île de la Cité, the island in the middle of the Seine where the city was founded some two thousand years ago. From there we follow the river westwards.
The route is deliberately short. Instead of chasing twelve sights in three hours, we stop at six and talk about why they are where they are. The bridges are the least noticed architectural collection in Paris — each built in a different era for a different reason — and from the water the layers of the city stack up in front of you.
The walk ends on the Left Bank among the bookshops and small squares, at a point where you can simply carry on by yourself if you want to.
The group is only your group. The pace is your pace, which means it works with a small child or with someone who walks slowly.
