Most European cities pulled their walls down in the nineteenth century to make room. Tallinn largely did not, which is why the old town still reads as a defended merchant settlement rather than as a historic quarter inside a modern city.
This walk follows that logic: the gates, the towers, the merchant houses with their hoists still on the facades, and the guild buildings that ran the place. Tallinn was a Hanseatic trading town, and almost everything in the old town makes sense once you see it as a business rather than as a romance.
Compact by nature — the old town is small, so this is a walk about detail rather than distance.
