Trastevere sits across the river from the historic centre and feels like a separate town: narrow lanes, washing lines, workshops, and a medieval church at the centre of it that is one of the oldest in Rome.
From there we climb the Aventine, which is the quietest hill in the city and, on a clear afternoon, one of the best places to be in it. Gardens, an orange grove with a view over the whole centre, and streets where you may not pass another visitor.
This half-day is for people who have already seen the headline sights, or who would rather skip them entirely.
