Walk in Van Gogh’s footsteps

When Van Gogh lived in Amsterdam he frequently visited the Noorderkerk. Later when he visited Amsterdam in 1885, he went to the newly opened Rijksmuseum, something he had looked forward since he heard about its construction in 1873. Now both locations feature Van Gogh’s work prominently and you can follow in the artists footsteps with this combi ticket when you visit Amsterdam.

Visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam

On his way to the Rijksmuseum Van Gogh painted his View of Amsterdam from Central Station and took it with him to the museum. Today, that small painting is one of his many paintings that is on display at the museum. There are several paintings which Van Gogh saw at the Rijksmuseum, that are still on display today, including Rembrandt’s The Jewish Bride, when he described the painting in a letter to his brother, he wrote “I would gladly give up ten years of my life to sit in front of the painting for two weeks, eating only a stale crust of bread”.

The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands and features works from many great Dutch masters, including Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh. The museum’s collection contains over a million pieces, which combined tell the story  of 800 years of Dutch art and history. There are painting, sculptures, model ships, armoury, dolls houses and even pieces of furniture.
