Explore two world famous fishing villages on your own
Pay a visit to the picturesque fishing villages of Volendam and Marken and experience it like a local! Walk, cycle and take the boat while you plan your own day at your own pace.
Start your day in the old fishing village of Volendam, which is well known throughout Holland for its lively harbour, green wooden houses, eel fishing and traditional costumes. See all these unique things for yourself on your visit to the village! Other must sees are Woltje’s bakery (including tasting) for a traditional Dutch stroopwafel cookie and The Cheese Factory for cheese shopping!
Whenever you’re ready, you resume your tour and set course to the second village of the day: Marken. This used to be an island, but has been connected to the main land by a road since 1957. Hop aboard of the Marken Express, sail over the Marker lake and enjoy the view over the water from harbour to harbour!
Once you set foot on the peninsula, you can follow the signs to the “Sijtje Boes”, an authentic house you can visit to discover how the people of Marken lived around 1940. When you walk among the houses on Marken, be careful to stay on the road because before you know it you’re in someone’s garden.
